Youngkin halted Ford battery plant efforts in Virginia
over concerns about China

Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration halted efforts to site a Ford battery plant in Virginia late last year over concerns about Chinese Communist Party influence.
Speaking to reporters after the annual State of the Commonwealth address Wednesday, Youngkin said his administration “felt that the right thing to do was to not recruit Ford as a front for China to America.”
A spokesperson for his office said the governor’s comments were linked to the possibility of Ford Motor Company building a battery manufacturing plant in Virginia that would be operated by Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., or CATL, a Chinese company that is the largest producer of electric vehicle batteries in the world and under the Ford agreement would retain ownership of the technology used in building the battery cells.
Bloomberg reported this December that Ford was eyeing Virginia as a competitor to Michigan, the auto giant’s home state.
Less than a week later, right-wing news outlet The Daily Caller published a story citing an anonymous source who claimed Youngkin had directed the Virginia Economic Development Partnership to remove Virginia from the running for the project.
The Youngkin administration did not provide further details about incentives considered for the project, potential sites or when Virginia withdrew from consideration.
Suzanne Clark, a spokesperson for the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, said that “for competitive reasons and to protect company confidentiality, VEDP will not comment on unannounced projects.”
Ford did not respond to specific inquiries about Youngkin’s remarks about the Ford plant serving as “a front for China” and whether the company’s plans were a security risk.
“As we shared in July, Ford plans to localize and use approximately 40 GWh of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery capacity in North America starting in 2026,” spokesperson Hannah Ooms said in an email. “We also announced a separate (memorandum of understanding) with CATL to explore a cooperation for supplying batteries for Ford vehicles in markets across North America, Europe and China. Our talks with CATL continue – and we have nothing new to announce on either front.”
The governor’s comments about the Ford proposal followed a series of dire warnings about Chinese influence and farmland purchases during his Wednesday speech to the General Assembly, which convened for the 2023 legislative session earlier that day.
Youngkin, who was the target this November of a social media swipe from former President Donald Trump that called him “Young Kin” and said the name “sounds Chinese,” denounced “the ever-growing threat that the Chinese Communist Party poses to our national security, our privacy and our way of life in Virginia.”
“Virginians should also be wary of Chinese Communist intrusion into Virginia’s economy,” he said. “We welcome and encourage economic cooperation with international companies. … But let me be clear, ‘Made in Virginia’ cannot be a front for the Chinese Communist Party.”
Youngkin later told reporters that his prior role as co-CEO of the Carlyle Group, a private equity firm that has invested extensively in China, made him “uniquely positioned to understand how the Chinese Communist Party works.”
“I understand what they’re doing,” he said. “They have one objective: global dominance at the expense of the United States.”
Much of Youngkin’s criticism of the Ford proposal Wednesday was accompanied by criticism of what he called Democratic President Joe Biden’s “maniacal focus on getting rid of all fossil fuel generation, replacing it with solar, wind, or replacing every car immediately with batteries” when “the reality is that the technology that in fact drives all that is owned and dominated by the Chinese.”
Concern over China’s primacy in the manufacturing of batteries and solar panels is shared by many policymakers in Washington on both sides of the aisle, particularly as renewables increasingly displace coal and put pressure on natural gas. Federal legislation backed by the White House and congressional Democrats has sought to jumpstart American manufacturing in both sectors: The CHIPS Act commits $52 billion in subsidies to domestic semiconductor manufacturers, while the Inflation Reduction Act ties tax credits for wind, solar and battery components to those materials’ production in the U.S.

Ron DeSantis issued one ultimatum about
this bone-chilling Chinese scheme

January 16, 2023

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis isn’t afraid to take on the tough fights.

He set his sights on one huge problem.

And Ron DeSantis issued one ultimatum about this bone-chilling Chinese scheme.

Communist China is using its financial muscle to spread its influence and power around the globe.

In the U.S., companies connected to Communist China have quietly been buying up billions of dollars’ worth of farmland and other properties across the country.

The Communist Chinese corporations have purchased land near an Air Force base in North Dakota that houses sensitive drone technology, and near several military bases in Texas, raising concerns over potential espionage operations.

President Joe Biden is asleep at the wheel as a hostile foreign country is gaining a foothold in the country.

As he starts his second term, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is looking to shut down any attempt by Communist China to buy property in the Sunshine State.

During a press conference, Governor DeSantis said that China is a “hostile nation,” and that the state’s legislature “has an appetite” to curb Chinese influence in the state.

“We don’t want to have holdings by hostile nations,” DeSantis said. “And so if you look at the Chinese Communist Party, they’ve been very active throughout the Western Hemisphere in gobbling up land and investing in different things.”

A report from the National Association of Realtors found that Chinese investors bought $6.1 billion worth of American real estate from March 2021 to March 2022, up 30% from the previous period.

“When [the CCP has] interests that are opposed to ours and you see how they’ve wielded their authority, that is not in the best interest of Florida to have the Chinese Communist Party owning farmland, owning land close to military bases,” DeSantis continued, “Why would you want them buying residential developments or things like that? I don’t want them owning subdivisions.”

A Chinese biotechnology company with ties to the country’s military purchased 1,400 acres of farmland they claim will be the site of a primate research facility in Florida.

“The Legislature only went so far a couple years ago,” DeSantis explained. “I think they’re going to have an appetite to do more because [China’s] influence on our society has been very insidious.”

Soft power or the use of indirect, non-military influence is letting Communist China make major inroads in countries beneath the radar.

Under Governor DeSantis’s leadership, Florida has worked to curb the influence of the CCP at universities in the state, and barred state agencies from using technology services linked to the Communist country.

The Florida Governor and legislature could take more bold action to stop Communist China from gaining access to the residential property market.

Ron DeSantis is leading the way by providing a blueprint about how to push back against China’s growing influence.

The Internal Revenue Service has announced it will begin accepting tax returns on January 23—kicking off the 2023 tax season—and announced other key deadlines for the tax season.

The US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) building in Washington, DC.

The IRS has just announced that the start of the 2023 tax season would officially begin on January 23 and is expected to end on April 18—adding an additional three days.

The agency expects more than 168 million Americans to file their taxes.

With the past three tax seasons being impacted by the pandemic, the IRS has taken on measures that would ensure Americans can file their returns in a more streamlined manner.

As part of the Inflation Reduction Act the agency hired more than 5,000 customer service representatives to help answer questions over the phone and provide other services for taxpayers (the key help line is: 1-800-829-1040 and online tools or resources can be found on the IRS website).

The IRS free file program will open ten days earlier on January 13 and taxpayers who made less than $73,000 in 2022 can file for free using brand-name software used by commercial tax filing companies.

The agency will use January 27 to raise awareness for those eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), the tax credit that helps low-and-moderate income workers and families.

The IRS also announced in November tax refunds in 2023 could be smaller as taxpayers will not receive additional stimulus payments in their refund due to no Economic Impact Payments in 2022.

Tax refunds are also expected to be issued in 21 days or less should taxpayers choose the direct deposit option when filing electronically, though the IRS says it can not issue refunds that include tax credits such as the EITC and the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) until mid-February due to the 2015 PATH Act which provides the IRS additional time to prevent fraudulent refunds being issued.

The IRS is also providing other free services, such as their Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly for qualified individuals.

“This filing season is the first to benefit the IRS and our nation’s tax system from multi-year funding in the Inflation Reduction Act,” said Acting IRS Commissioner Doug O’Donnell. “With these new additional resources, taxpayers and tax professionals will see improvements in many areas of the agency this year. We’ve trained thousands of new employees to answer phones and help people. While much work remains after several difficult years, we expect people to experience improvements this tax season.

Jan. 13: IRS Free File opens

Jan. 17: Due date for tax year 2022 fourth quarter estimated tax payment.

Jan. 23: IRS begins 2023 tax season and starts accepting and processing individual 2022 tax returns.

April 18: National due date to file a 2022 tax return or request an extension and pay tax owed due to the Emancipation Day holiday in Washington, D.C.

Oct. 16: Due date to file for those requesting an extension on their 2022 tax returns.
