Reports: Elon Musk takes over at Twitter, begins cleaning house

SAN FRANCISCO — Elon Musk took control at Twitter on Thursday as his $44 billion deal to buy the social media giant closed, and the billionaire immediately began cleaning house, according to published reports.
The Washington Post and The New York Times, citing unnamed sources, said that Musk, 51, fired several top Twitter executives.
Both newspapers identified the executives as Parag Agrawal, Twitter’s chief executive; Ned Segal, the chief financial officer; Vijaya Gadde, the top legal and policy executive; and Sean Edgett, the general counsel.
Musk, Agrawal, Segal, Gadde, Edgett and a Twitter spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment, according to the Times.
Three of the top Twitter executives were hastily removed from the building, the Post reported.
Agrawal had clashed with Musk publicly and privately in recent months about the takeover, according to the Times. Musk had also criticized Gadde for her role in content moderation decisions at the company, the newspaper reported.
“I don’t have confidence in management,” Musk wrote in his initial takeover letter in April, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Musk has said he plans to review Twitter’s content moderation policies with an eye toward an approach to more “free speech,” CNN reported. Musk said he also disagreed with the company’s practice of permanently banning users who repeatedly violate its rules.
In a letter posted Thursday on Twitter and addressed to advertisers on the platform, Musk said he bought Twitter “to help humanity.”

“The reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence,” he wrote.
“There is currently great danger that social media will splinter into far right wing and far left wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide in our society.”
Musk told employees on Wednesday that he does not plan to cut 75% of the company’s staff, Bloomberg reported, citing unidentified sources. Earlier, the Post reported that Musk had told prospective investors he planned to whittle down the number of Twitter employees.
Musk showed up at Twitter’s offices on Wednesday carrying a sink to suggest that the idea of him becoming the owner of the company still needed to “sink in,” according to a photograph he posted to his more than 100 million Twitter followers, the Post reported.
The purchase comes months after Musk initially sought to buy the social media company and then backed out, citing concerns that the number of fake accounts on the site could be much higher than reported by Twitter officials. The company accepted Musk’s offer in April. Musk announced his intention to back out of the deal in July.
Musk was facing a Friday deadline set by a Delaware judge to finalize the deal, The Associated Press reported. She threatened to schedule a trial if no agreement was reached.

US military forces ‘fully prepared’ to cross into Ukraine

U.S. military forces are “fully prepared” to cross into Ukraine at a moment’s notice to fight a war against Russia .
The Army’s 101st Airborne Division, which boasts the “Screaming Eagles” moniker, has been deployed to Europe for the first time since World War II , practicing with live tank and artillery rounds not far from the Black Sea, across which Russia has taken territory from Ukraine, including Crimea, at a forward operating site on NATO’s eastern flank, according to CBS News .
Brig. Gen. John Lubas, the division’s deputy commander, stressed this is “not a training deployment” but rather a “combat deployment” from which his forces “need to be ready to fight tonight, depending on how the situation escalates across the border.”
Col. Edwin Matthaidess, commander of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, told the news outlet these troops are the closest U.S. unit to the fighting in Ukraine, still raging more than seven months into Russia’s full-scale invasion began. “It keeps us on our toes,” he said.
The roughly 4,700 soldiers from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, are about three miles away from Romania ‘s border with Ukraine, conducting joint ground and air assault exercises with Romanian forces meant to simulate battles that Ukrainian forces are waging against Russian invaders.
“It’s not just about defending NATO territory,” Charlie D’Agata, senior foreign correspondent for CBS News, said in one report from an air base in Romania. “If the fight escalates, and NATO partners are under threat, they’re fully prepared to cross over into Ukrainian territory if ordered to do so.”

American Troops Prepared to Engage in War With Russia

AU.S. aircraft carrier is prepared to lead an international charge should Russia escalate attacks against Ukraine and its allies.
The USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), christened in 2006 and delivered to the Navy in 2009, is in the Adriatic Sea leading Neptune Strike 2022—a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) deployment that tests deterrence and defense in the Euro-Atlantic area.
Allied and partner nations taking part include Albania; Canada; Croatia; Finland; France; Germany; Greece; Hungary; Italy; Lithuania; North Macedonia; Poland; Romania; Slovakia; Slovenia; Sweden; Turkey; the United Kingdom; and the United States.
“The Neptune series is a tangible demonstration of the power and capability of the NATO Alliance in all domain operations,” Vice Admiral Thomas Ishee, commander of the U.S. Sixth Fleet and Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO, said in a statement at the deployment’s kickoff October 14 in Oeiras, Portugal. “Neptune Strike 22.2 is a prime example of NATO’s ability to integrate high-end maritime warfare capabilities of an allied carrier strike group, ensuring our collective ability to deter and defend.”
Aircraft fly in formation over the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush during a joint training exercise involving U.S. and French naval forces on May 15, 2018. U.S. military personnel have recently participated in NATO-related exercises, preparing for whatever occurs in the Russia-Ukraine war.
The deployment includes more than 80 aircraft, 14 ships, and about 6,000 personnel from 24 NATO allies and partners, including Finland and Sweden.
As part of exercises, U.S. Navy F-18s flew from the carrier to Lithuania in recent days, working alongside France, Latvia and Hungary.
Prior to that, the same fighter aircraft reportedly joined Canadian fighter aircraft for patrols over Romania.
U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa spokesperson Captain Tamara Lawrence confirmed to Newsweek on Wednesday that the carrier is participating in Neptune Strike.
“While deployed to the U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa area of operations, the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group stands ready to respond to a variety of missions when tasked, in defense of the United States and our NATO allies and partners,” Lawrence said.
When asked whether heightened tensions in the form of nuclear warfare cause increased awareness on behalf of military personnel, Lawrence said the Navy’s policy involves not commenting on future operations or to “respond to hypotheticals.”
USS George H.W. Bush Rear Admiral Dennis Velez told Sky News inside a large on-board hangar that said peace is always the answer, but U.S. troops remain vigilant.
“We want the war [in Ukraine] to be over and to bring stability back to the region and have a peaceful and stable Europe, but for us, we are ready,” Velez said.
He said he saw two Russian warships observing NATO exercises, both entities operating under international law and on their own accord in international waters.
“It is one of the things that you just have to rely on your training,” Lieutenant Cordan Mackenzie, 27, one of the F-18 pilots on board, told Sky News. “Without a doubt, I think U.S.-trained Navy pilots are the best in the world….All we do out here is train and get ready for a fight that might come and I think when it comes, pilot to pilot, I hope we are the better man in the box.”
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg visited the “impressive” aircraft carrier on Tuesday, calling it “a demonstration of U.S. capability and commitment to the alliance.”
“This exercise is a perfect example of the transatlantic bond, Europe and North America working together in NATO,” Stoltenberg said. “It demonstrates our ability to rapidly reinforce our allies and project power across the alliance. NATO is a defensive alliance. Our deterrence prevents conflict and preserves peace.
“Our strength helps to prevent any miscalculation by sending a clear message: NATO will protect and defend every inch of allied territory.”
He also warned Russia to “not use false pretexts for further escalation,” in reference to Russia accusing Ukraine of preparing to drop a radiological “dirty bomb” on its own territory.
Hans Kristensen, director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists, warned that Russia may test nuclear weapons that coincide with NATO’s own nuclear exercise, “Steadfast Noon.”

House Republicans launch investigation into Biden’s drawdown of oil reserve

House Republicans are opening an investigation into the Biden administration‘s drawdowns of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to quell high fuel prices, which they said leaves the country vulnerable to more supply shocks.
Members of the House Oversight Committee, in a letter sent to United States Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm on Thursday, requested communications between Department of Energy officials about the SPR reaching back to Inauguration Day. The request covers any documents referring or relating to using the SPR to lower prices between DOE officials, the White House, and third-party groups.
The Strategic Petroleum Reserve “was created as an emergency buffer to mitigate domestic fallout from global market shocks,” the lawmakers said. “But after President Joe Biden emptied more of our vital stockpiles than all previous presidents combined, the SPR now sits at its lowest levels since establishment.”
“Dipping further into the SPR to cover additional foreign fuel bans or price fluctuations is a short-sighted fix that would inadvertently exacerbate U.S. vulnerability,” they also said.
In late March, Biden ordered an emergency drawdown amounting to roughly 180 million barrels of oil from the reserve after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sent oil markets into a tailspin.
That drawdown, which was originally set to take place over a six-month period, was ordered on top of an internationally coordinated drawdown ordered shortly after the war began, as well as a separate, non-emergency release of SPR oil announced in November 2021.
In November 2021, when Biden announced his first release of SPR oil to tame high gasoline prices, SPR stocks stood at around 600 million barrels. They now stand at around 400 million barrels, according to the Energy Information Administration.
Republicans have criticized Biden’s use of the SPR as a politicization of the reserve designed to help Democrats during an election year, while many Democrats have championed Biden’s actions and floated changes to law that would give the president more authority to use the reserve to tame high prices.
Oversight Republicans, in their letter to Granholm, also requested communications regarding the potential imposition of an export ban on petroleum products, something the Biden administration has declined to rule out as it weighs further measures to tame high retail fuel prices.
“We are concerned that the president may soon impose an oil and gas export ban that will result in even higher gas prices, supply chain issues, global market upheaval, and reduced energy security for the U.S. and our allies,” the lawmakers said.
