According to Fox News, Donald Trump, who was initially summoned to testify and provide papers about the events of January 6, 2021, would no longer be mandated to appear before the Jan. 6 committee.
Trump’s testimony is no longer required and his subpoena has been lifted. Thompson indicated in a letter to Donald Trump’s legal team that he is no longer compelled to comply or produce information for the committee.
“In light of our investigation’s impending conclusion, the Select Committee will no longer pursue the precise facts covered by the subpoena,” the letter said.
“As a result, I hereby formally withdraw the subpoena served to former President Donald Trump, and advise you that he will no longer be compelled to cooperate or provide records,” Thompson continued.
On his Truth Social account, the 45th president responded:
“I was recently informed that the Unselect Committee of political Thugs has dropped the Subpoena issued to me in connection with the January 6th Protest of the CROOKED Presidential Election of 2020. They most likely did so because they knew I had done nothing wrong or because they were going to lose in court. Perhaps the FBI’s role in rigging the election influenced their decision. In any case, the Subpoena has expired!”
Members of the media, including BlazeTV anchor Mark Levin, slammed the committee as “idiotic” and “counterfeit.”
Rep. Adam Schiff says he seeks to reform regulations governing how elections are certified.
Just weeks before the subpoena was dismissed, Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois declared that Trump is “certainly guilty” of crimes committed on January 6, 2021.
“I believe he committed a crime. I mean, he understood what he was doing. That has been made very apparent. Prior to January 6, he was aware of what was going on. He persuaded Justice Department officials to tell him, ‘Hey, just declare the election was stolen and just leave the rest to me.’ “And then the Republicans as a whole have to sign off on it,” Kinzinger said in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper .
Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida is also under investigation but hasn’t been charged.
