Bret Baier and President Donald Trump warmed up for the Super Bowl with a pregame interview on Fox News. Their pre-taped conversation aired at 3 p.m. ET as part of Fox’s pregame show.

In a clip released by Fox News, Baier asked Trump about the controversy surrounding Elon Musk and the Department of Governmental Efficiency or DOGE. In recent weeks, Musk has disrupted federal agencies like USAID and the Treasury Department in a self-stated quest to reduce government spending. Those actions have resulted in numerous lawsuits, as well as firings and resignations within the civil service.

In his interview with Baier, Trump expressed full support for Musk, saying that he’s “been terrific.”

“He’s not gaining anything,” Trump added when asked by Baier whether Musk has earned his trust, indicating that DOGE is acting at his behest. “I told him to do that.”

“I’m going to tell him… to go check on the Department of Education,” the president continues. “He’s going to find the same thing. Then I’m going to go to the military….We’re going to find billions, hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud and abuse. The people elected me on that.”

Trump also expressed strenuous disagreement with the federal judge who blocked DOGE’s attempt to access Treasury Department information. “We have to solve the efficiency problem,” he said.

Baier also asked about the tariffs that the Trump administration came close to levying against Mexico and Canada. While a deal was ultimate reached with both of those countries, Trump did institute a 10% tariff on goods imported from China.

“We’re not that rich right now,” Trump told Baier. “That’s because we let all these nations take advantage of us….I’m not going to let that happen.” The president also reiterated his desire to see Canada become a “51st state,” a suggestion that has been met with resistance by Canadian citizens.

The interview ended with Trump picking the Kansas City Chiefs as the likely Super Bowl victor, and he paid special tribute to Brittany Mahomes, wife of the team’s quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “She’s a Trump fan,” he suggested. “She’s great and he’s great.”
