The 32nd Annual Commemoration
of Vietnam Human Rights Day
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, a commemorative ceremony will be held in Room HVC-201 A&B in the Capitol Visitor Center, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM EST, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding the human rights situation in Vietnam.
The event marks the 32nd anniversary of U.S. House-Senate Joint Resolution SJ 168, which designated May 11th as Vietnam Human Rights Day. Signed into law by President Bill Clinton on May 25, 1994 (Public Law 103-258), the resolution established an annual bipartisan observance dedicated to promoting freedom, democracy, and human rights in Vietnam.
This year’s theme, “Advocating Human Rights in Vietnam,” comes at a particularly significant moment, coinciding with the 51st anniversary of the fall of South Vietnam. The program will address ongoing concerns including restrictions on religious freedom, limitations on free and fair elections, transnational repression, and the continued detention of political dissidents. Organizers emphasize the importance of drawing international attention to both domestic and international human rights violations.
The program will feature remarks from Members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives from both parties, officials from the U.S. Department of State, and representatives of leading international human rights organizations.
The keynote address will be delivered by Ambassador Julie Turner, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, who will provide insight into current human rights conditions and challenges in Vietnam.
Delegations from Vietnamese, Tibetan communities across the United States will also be in attendance, demonstrating continued solidarity and commitment to advancing human rights and democratic freedoms.
