You may qualify for the 5 below refunds (based on Helen, 67, retired nurse, PA, $54K income):

  1. Senior Bonus Deduction — $720 refund. The One Big Beautiful Bill created a $6,000 deduction for taxpayers 65+ (income under $75K single / $150K MFJ). Many 2025 returns were filed without it because tax software had not been updated. File Form 1040-X to amend. $720 at the 12% bracket.

  2. Property Tax Rebate — $760 (2yr retroactive). Pennsylvania’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program provides up to $380/yr for qualifying seniors. Helen’s $43K qualifying income (excludes half of SS) places her in the top eligible tier. Most states have similar programs — call your county assessor.

  3. State Income Tax Overpayment — $1,964 (2yr amended returns). Pennsylvania exempts ALL retirement income from state tax (3.07% rate). Helen’s preparer did not apply the exclusion. $982/yr × 2 years. Also applies in IL, MS, IA. Partial exclusions in NY ($20K/person), NJ ($100K for 62+), MI (birth year dependent).

  4. Estimated Tax Penalty Waiver — $240. If you are 62+ and retired in the last 2 tax years, the IRS can waive the underpayment penalty entirely. File Form 2210 and check the retirement waiver box. One form, one checkbox.

  5. Medicare IRMAA Surcharge — $1,148 (gap year recovery). If you recently retired and your premiums spiked based on your old working income, file Form SSA-44. Retirement is a qualifying Life-Changing Event. 2026 Tier 1 surcharges: Part B $81.20/mo + Part D $14.50/mo = $95.70/mo × 12 = $1,148/yr. Note: this is a 1-2 year gap fix, not ongoing — Medicare auto-corrects once it sees your lower post-retirement income.

Helen’s total: $4,832. Title says $4,800.
Ongoing annual savings: $3,042/yr ($720 + $380 + $982 + $960 IRA withholding adjustment).
Over 10 years: $30,000+.

Helen made 5 phone calls in 1 week. Total time: ~3 hours. Result: $4,832 recovered + $3,042/yr ongoing.
