Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., on Monday announced that he was under investigation by the Department of Justice, insisting that the agency had targeted him due to his presidential ambitions.
"Today, my wife & I joined Donald Trump’s hit list. He has directed his Department of Justice to investigate us," he posted on X. "They have not found a crime – they are simply trying to find one. He isn’t coming after me because of mean tweets, but because I am considering running for President. He hates that I consistently call him out. He is simply the most corrupt President in American history. We have nothing to hide. Mr. President, come after me. I am not going anywhere. The country is watching."
Newsom has attracted speculation as a potential Democratic nominee in recent years. He previously backed President Joe Biden in 2024, until then-Vice President Kamala Harris took over at the top of the ticket.
The Democratic governor accused the DOJ of "abusing the grand jury process" and said that federal agencies had sought information from family members and close associates.
"Donald Trump is simply the most corrupt president in American history," Newsom added.
