SpaceX Satellite Phones Poised to Disrupt Mobile Communications

SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, is poised to advance into the mobile communications sector. The company plans to directly connect satellites in space with smartphones on the ground, offering not only internet access but also voice calls, text messaging, and other services.

Japan’s Nikkei reported on July 1 that SpaceX is conceptualizing a “Starlink Mobile” initiative, which involves launching additional satellites to enable direct connections between smartphones and its satellite internet network. Since 2019, SpaceX has operated the Starlink project, deploying over 10,000 small satellites at an altitude of 550 km in low Earth orbit. As of early this year, the company had launched over 10,000 satellites and aims to expand this to 40,000 units. Building on this infrastructure, SpaceX intends to extend beyond home and enterprise satellite internet—requiring dedicated receivers—to provide communication services directly to smartphones. Musk previously stated in 2023, “Within the next two years, Starlink services will allow the use of mobile phones, similar to major carriers like AT&T.”
