‘Risk Indicators’ Added to Level 2 Travel Advisory
The U.S. Department of State has officially added risk indicators for “crime” and “unrest” to its existing Level 2 travel advisory in Belgium. The update urges travelers to “exercise increased caution” in the country when visiting, and to stay aware of their surroundings.
The update mentions petty crime as a potential issue, citing “crimes of opportunity” against foreign travelers like purse snatching and pickpocketing. The State Department also mentions the Brussels metro and various train stations around the country as hubs of potential petty crime, with thieves likely to target bags stored overhead.
Visitors are advised to keep their valuables – cash, jewelry and vital travel documents – close at all times. Those choosing to rent cars or drive in Belgium are advised to avoid street parking for garages when possible, and to park near a street light if parking on the street is absolutely necessary.
“Large-scale, generally peaceful demonstrations related to the local political situation” are possible in the country, and these demonstrations could disrupt transit and other services that tourists would normally depend on.
The advisory notes that police monitor these demonstrations when they take place, but also says that situations can escalate quickly. Visitors are advised to stay aware of local media and to consult the Embassy with questions if needed.

Major events throughout Belgium over the next few months include several concerts and music festivals, as well as sporting events like the Diamond League final, where the world’s best track and field athletes will compete for international glory.
