Senate Republicans confirmed 74 of President Donald Trump’s nominees Friday, wiping out most of the administration’s pending civilian nominations and giving Trump one of the fastest confirmation paces in decades.
The Washington Times reported that the Senate approved the nominees en bloc on a 51-47 party-line vote, the fifth such package since Republicans changed the chamber’s rules last year to speed consideration of lower-level presidential appointments.
With the latest vote, the Senate has cleared roughly 95% of Trump’s civilian nominees awaiting floor action.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., contrasted the results with those during Trump’s first term, when Democrats used Senate procedures to slow the confirmation process.
"At this same point in President Trump’s first term, there were 155 unconfirmed nominees on the calendar. This year that number is on track to be about 10," Thune said.
The latest group reportedly includes more than a dozen ambassadors, along with executive officials at the Energy, Interior, State, Treasury, and War departments.
The Senate also confirmed appointees to the National Labor Relations Board, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, as well as associate judges receiving 15-year terms on District of Columbia courts.
Republicans changed Senate rules last year after Democrats refused to fast-track Trump nominees through voice votes or unanimous consent.
GOP senators branded the tactics "historic Democratic obstruction" but say the rule change has helped produce "the best confirmation track record in a quarter century."
Trump’s second-term confirmation pace is also running ahead of the comparable periods under Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
