The woman who was fatally stabbed in Times Square on Aug. 31 had recently welcomed her first child.

Erin Piacenti, a 32-year-old vice president in the business selection and conflicts division at Bank of America, had just completed her first day back at work following her maternity leave when she was killed while heading home for the day, reports The New York Times.

She and her husband Frank Piacenti had recently moved from their apartment on the Upper East Side to a new home in Chester, N.J., a suburb located approximately 40 miles west of New York City.

In a photo posted to Instagram just a few days before the stabbing, a smiling Piacenti held her baby daughter while standing next to her husband.

Just before 4:30 p.m., 49-year-old Pamela Cisneros allegedly approached Piacenti and stabbed her in the abdomen in what police described as an unprovoked attack.

Just moments prior, Cisneros had also stabbed 68-year-old Tak Kam after he exited the subway.

Kam, who was in the city visiting his son at the time, was taken to Bellevue Hospital and is expected to recover from the attack.

Officers with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) who were in the area were able to surround Cisneros shortly after she stabbed Piacenti.

When those officers instructed Cisneros to put down her weapons, she refused, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference hours after the attack.

“I’m not dropping anything, I would rather kill both of you,” Cisneros told the officers, according to Tisch. Cisneros then said: “I will kill you.”

Videos from the scene show that Cisneros then began waving her knives before advancing on the officers, who attempted to subdue the woman with a Taser before fatally shooting her.

Cisneros had no arrest record but did have a “documented mental health history with the NYPD, with one incident in 2019 and another in 2020,” Tisch said.

PEOPLE has learned that the 2019 incident involved public intoxication and the 2020 incident was a possible suicide attempt.

The officers involved in the shooting were transported to a local hospital for evaluation while Cisneros was taken to Bellevue, where she was pronounced dead.

Police recovered the knives at the scene, and the NYPD Force Investigation Division is investigating the incident.

Piacenti was remembered by her employer, Bank of America, which released a statement after her death that read: “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague. She was a valued teammate who will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to her family and all of her loved ones.”

Fordham Law School, where Piacenti met her husband, also released a statement after her death.

“Erin was a vibrant and cherished member of the Fordham Law family,” read a message sent to alumni from the school’s dean on Sept. 1. “During her time at Fordham, she distinguished herself through her academic devotion, sharp legal mind, warmth and generosity to her peers.”
