NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Travelers in the new year should be ready for tighter enforcement of carry-on luggage rules, and a new option for those without a standard ID.
Most airlines now limit carry-on bags to 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 9 inches deep, wheels and handles included. Southwest Airlines allows slightly larger bags at 24-16-10 inches.
These rules come from the airlines, not the TSA, and exceeding them could mean extra fees, so it’s a good idea to check your bag’s dimensions before you head to the airport.
Some airlines, including Air Canada, may require you to check your larger carry on bags, that can not be classified as a personal item, prior to going through security for certain basic fare tickets. If you bring your large carry on bag to the plane’s gate for your flight, you will be asked to check your bag there before boarding the flight and the rate of $35 will be raised to $65.
Starting Feb. 1, passengers without a standard ID can pay $45 for a temporary ID verification to fly within the U.S.
